Coonoor in the Nilgiri Hills is a quiet, little town blessed with abundance of nature. Coonoor is rich with ravines, waterfalls, lovely bends and deep valleys. Tea plantations adorn most parts of Coonoor and are a mere 19km from Ooty. This is a haven for bird watchers as it is filled with a variety of bird species inlcluding parakeets, thrushes, pipits, cormorants and more. This is the best place to trek and hike as it is rich in tough terrains. During summer the town witnesses a high number of tourists who enjoy every inch of the place. Filmmakers from all over the world storm to this place to create magical memories. Likewise do not miss out a ride on the heritage train that takes you through the picturesque outskirts of Coonoor on its way to Ooty. How to reach:

Coonoor is easily accessible via road. Buses can be boarded from Coimbatore to reach this lovely destination. Buses are also available from others parts of Tamilnadu. The nearby airport is in Coimbatore and a mere 3 hour drive will take you to this heaven on earth.

Railways can also be used to connect to Coonoor. Trains to Coonoor can be boarded from Mettupalayam and the ride uphill is what attracts thousands of tourists. As the train slowly jugs its way up, you can witness some of the mind blowing views in these hills.

Places to visit
Simspark

This park is spread over a large area and is home to several plants and trees that stand tall for over a hundred years. Trees, creepers and shrubs fill this garden and this is home to unusual species from all parts of the world. The main attractions include the Karry Pine from Queensland and The bead tree Rudraksha. This is the venue for the annual fruit show held during summer.

Highfield Tea Factory

Take a tour of the factory and learn the art of tea making. Visit the tea plantations and take home some of the unique tea varieties ranging from green tea, white tea, chocolate tea and more. This 50 year old tea factory acts as a tea plantation tour site, Photography site, Sightseeing Destination, Education site and the best place to shop for chocolates, oils and others.

Lambs Rock

This tourist spot offers a lovely view of the tea estates, Coimbatore plains and coffee estates. The road that leads you to this viewpoint is a beauty in its own way. As the winding road takes you through the dense forest and scarcely populated areas, you can connect to the nature in a unique way.

Droog Fort

This fort was an outpost of Tipu Sultan dating back to the 18Th century. Most part of the fort is ruined except one wall that stands tall in pride. This is the main attraction for people who hike via Nonsuch Estate.

Tigerhill Cemetery

This 19th century British graveyard was used for war burials. Most tombs belong to officers of the East India Company and their families. Few memorials are decorated with ornates, sculptures and epitaphs. The stone gateway with an arch speaks volumes of the old ways.

Rallia Dam

This dam dates back to the 1914 and is located in a secluded place. A lovely trek will take you to this amazing place that serves the water purpose of the town. Rare species of animals, birds, reptiles and others reside in peace. If you are lucky, you can spot one or two and capture them with your camera lens.

A 30 minute ride will take you to Ooty and Kotagiri , the other two towns that belongs to Nilgiris. The famous Kodanad estate and view point are in Kotagiri and is also famous for parks and waterfalls.
